It is almost half through the year now. and I have been reflecting on the things that I wanted to get done this year. When the year started, I did something differently that I have done in the past – I did not make the ususal resolutions. Instead of saying I want to lose weight – I have been working on eating better and exercising. This makes it about a lifestyle change instead of just a goal on the horizon.
I have found this an easier goal to reach and maintain. What goals did you set for the new year? I have a friend, Helen Rappy, and she is the Action Habits Lady. I have learned to make small specific goals that I can reach in a day. Every night before I go to sleep – I write down 3-4 things that I want to get done the next day. This accompishes two things.
First, when I get up, I know exactly how to use my time wisely so I can get to my goals. Next, I do not have a big project looming over me that makes me anxious and depressed. No, I only have 3 realistic things I need to do.
Goal setting is one of the best ways to make things happen. Take out your trusty notebook and write down everything that you want to get accomplished. This is your deal so you can make it as detailed as you think necessary. Next, take the item that you want to get done first. Now, break that down into small parts.
For example, if your goal is to paint the house, break that job into small tasks. You can start with going by the store and getting color charts and information about what kind and brand of paint you want to use. Decide on the amount you can spend on the project and the prices of the supplies needed. You could do all of that in a single day and have time to spare.
However, at the end of the day, you have made a real step toward the goal. At the same time, you don’t have to worry about all the other tasks involved. Just the ones for that single day. That night, write down the goals for the next day. Don’t skip the writing down part. That is the crucial step. It plants the idea in your mind and your brain can work on it during the night.
